Newman's Department Store

1898-1972

Description

Newman’s Department Store was a cornerstone of Joplin’s retail scene for over seven decades, serving the community from 1898 to 1972. Founded by Joseph Newman and his family, Newman’s began as a dry goods store in 1898 and quickly grew into a retail giant. A Pioneering Spirit In 1910, Newman’s moved to a new location at the corner of 6th and Main Street, a magnificent five-story building that was the first in Joplin to have elevators and electricity. This grand structure, now known as the Newman Brothers Building, became a landmark in Joplin’s downtown district. The store offered a wide variety of merchandise, from clothing, shoes, and hats to toys, books, and housewares. Newman’s was known for its innovative spirit and its commitment to customer service, making it a favorite shopping destination for generations of Joplin residents. A Community Fixture Beyond being a retail space, Newman’s Department Store was a fixture in the Joplin community. The store hosted events, offered a U.S. Post Office substation for added convenience, and provided a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers. Newman’s Department Store played a significant role in Joplin’s social and economic life. An Enduring Legacy While Newman’s Department Store closed its doors in 1972, its legacy lives on. The Newman Brothers Building, a testament to the store’s architectural grandeur, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and currently houses Joplin city offices.
