Located in the viaduct under 6th Street and Virginia Avenue, the Downtown Lion Mural was a joint effort between Downtown Joplin Alliance and Missouri Southern State University’s Art Department. The mural is comprised of four panels featuring three lions and a lantern. While there were many concepts for the piece, the final design was influenced by a 1970s mural located near the Frisco building, which was painted by Southern students. The vivid, new mural was dedicated on September 19, 2019, during the MSSU-hosted Third Thursday.
