Located at 1st & Main Street, the mural depicts show performers who played in or visited Joplin. As some of you may know, Langston Hughes and Charles McPherson were both born in Joplin. Depicted on the mural from right to left are: – Charles McPherson – Scott Joplin – Duke Ellington – Marian Anderson – Cab Calloway – Ella Johnson – Melissa Cuther – Sammy Davis Jr. – Langston Hughes – Dizzy Gillespie – Mamie Smith – Ella Fitzgerald Also shown is the Lincoln School, the school for Black students in Joplin during the time of segregation, and the Joplin Uplift, a Black-owned newspaper The LHCS thanks artist Alexander Austin for the immaculate design.
